  • a nationally influential Baptist minister
  • one of the seven most distinguished preachers in America according to Time magazine
  • an advocate for tolerance
  • oversaw Harvard University's Memorial Church for more than 30 years,
  • published 11 volumes of sermons and numerous books
  • participated in the inaugurations of Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush.
  • participated in the first inauguration of Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick.
