A Place of Grace
Religious education is multifaceted. It involves best practices of teaching and learning, curriculum development, spiritual formation, and mentoring from cradle to grave. It requires a large measure of volunteer management, finding and equipping those willing to answer the call to be teachers and mentors in the church. Increasingly it requires technology to stay relevant and navigate a very complex world. Those are the tools of the trade, but underlying these tools must be a relational focus, motivation found in love of God and neighbor. Together in community we explore real questions through scripture, tradition, experience, and reason. What does God require? How does a loving God allow evil? How shall we pray? Is there hope for hurting people and a broken world? The goal is nothing less than transformation into the people God wants us to be.
Jack Seymour, Margaret Crain, and Joseph Crockett in their book Educating Christians: The Intersection of Learning, Meaning, and Vocation stress the need for a just and hospitable space for persons to grow into God's vision for them. I hope this is such a space where helpful guides are offered to servant leaders who are companions on this journey of discipleship we share.
